Augusta was born in what was then the Belgian Congo. Her father was a Belgian veterinarian and her mother was a native of Congo. When Augusta was nine years old she moved to Bastogne with her father. Augusta was a nursing student and when the town became surrounded the US Army requested her help in the Aid station. She was a fearless nurse and accompanied the Medics out into the battlefield to bring back the wounded soldiers.
