Renee Lamaire - Belgian Civilian Nurse

Updated: Nov 9, 2019

Renee was born and raised in Bastogne. During the war she was a nursing student in Brussels and dated a boy living there. It turned out that the boy was Jewish and he and his father were taken away by the Gestapo. She returned to Bastogne for Christmas to be with her family. When the town became surrounded she was requested to help in the US Army Aid Station. She was killed in the bombing of Bastogne on Christmas Eve 1944 while she was tending to the wounded soldiers in the Aid Station. The men wrapped her in a silk parachute to take her back to her family - the type of silk that she had so wanted to make her wedding dress out of.

If I Die Young - by The Band Perry - reminds me so much of Renee.
